through our defense secretary, other senior officials in the administration -- >> they said it's on the table. >> no one believes that because they've repeatedly spelled out how disastrous it would be, bad for america, wouldn't wipe out the iranian nuclear program, how much they are opposed to military action. they say it's on the table but no one believes it's on the table. we're not saying the military action should be used. but we are arguing that the threat of military action should be credible so it focuses the iranian leadership on reaching some diplomatic solution so if the threat of military action is credible you increase the likelihood of a diplomatic solution. you increase the likelihood that the iranians choose to freeze and stop their program, their nuclear program, race to a nuclear weapon rather than risk military action. by the president and his senior officials repeated projection broadcasting that military action is on the table but doesn't have a lot of teeth to it doesn't give the iranians incentive to get off the course they're on today. that's his point. y

. and that's on offense. then you think about what he has to do on defense. he's going to be on the defense on the 47%. he's going to be on defense on his tax question. i mean, this is a guy who doesn't have very much to work with at this point. so it's hard for me to see, even if he doesn't make a major gaffe, which he does on a weekly basis, even if he doesn't, what ammunition does he have to actually have a good showing? >> i'm told there are examples of elections turning on debates, president bush for example started gaining on al gore when they faced off in 2000. is it usually the case that debates are quite the kind of game-changer that everybody thinks this one has to be for romney to do anything successfully in november? >> no, it's not. the historical data shows that i think we sort of exaggerate the role of debates. i would tip my hat to the washington monthly that has a nice article that goes through some of the political science and polling on this. it says they have a marginal impact. one notable exception was the 2000 debates between bush and gore where it appears gore pllo tw

the use of violence. and yesterday, joel, president obama offered this robust defense of freedom of speech as a pre-eminent right in our country but meanwhile while this speech comes together is there a conflict between those two visions? >> thank you, thomas, for having me. there's really not a conflict. in a sense, president obama and netanyahu bracketing the speeches today of ahmadinejad and morsi and we witness something fascinating which is that morsi shown that egypt is now taking a more aggressive leadership role in the middle east while iran has become more isolated, is on the ropes and ahmadinejad is season almost as a past, a clowny-type figure but this discussion of freedom of speech, of how to deal with violence against embassies, it's the president speaking with morsi about this and calmed down the situation in cairo so i think it's a dialogue to see more of and doesn't seem to be a clash not workable. >> all right. so jim, as joel said, egypt wanting to take more of a leadership role here and iran astro sized than ever before and talking about syria, world leader after world

middle class families, that was almost an entirely defensive ad. and that quinnipiac/"new york times" poll showed why. there was a question in there that asked, does obama, does romney care about the middle class, the rich, the poor, or everyone equally? most polls that give four choices usually get scattered answers. 58% of the people in ohio said that mitt romney's policies favored the rich. by contrast, 59% said that obama's policies favored either everybody equally or the middle class. that's a 17-point gap. and i think the auto rescue is part of it. those bain ads are part of it. ken blackwell, the former republican secretary of state was on cnn today. and he said it was just like '04. bush roughed up kerry in the summer and kerry never recovered. and he didn't say romney will never recover, but the implication was, romney's in a heap of trouble. >> chris redfern, who is the chairman of the democratic party in ohio also with us tonight. chris. a very untenable position that governor kasich is being placed in, to go out and talk about the economy when it's all positive for worker

eisenhower named to defense secretary, said what's good for gm is good for america, and vice versa, he was ridiculed because most people understood that what is good for the big corporation in terms of profits is not necessarily good for workers, even though at that time gm was unionized and engine charlie's words more likely the fact then than they are right now. the fact is for the last 30 years america has seen corporations do better and better and better and yet the median wage has gone absolutely nowhere, adjusted for inflation. most people are more insecure in terms of their jobs and their benefits are drying up. corporate profits should not necessarily come at the expense of workers but, in fact, that is exactly what has happened and the bain framework, the bain strategy is at the center of this strategy overall. >> harvest is a very interesting word that he used. it's kind of like lingo, not a few years ago, you know, the term "out of the box." i remember back in the '80s when farming wasn't too bad and a certain player harvested so many numbers or we're going to go in and harv

this case by case. what we expect from this time they are assembled. >> first of all, the defense of marriage act. this was signed by president clinton and for the purposes of federal law, marriage is only between a man and a woman. that enmoos federal government won't recognize same-sex marriages even in the states where that's legal. that's unusual because states usually define what is a valid marriage. several lower federal courts have said that's unconstitutional discrimination. and the supreme court will probably take this case. i say probably. it's not on the docket yet. but whenever the lower courts strike down an act of congress, the supreme court considers its job to step in and take this case. i think we would hear about that. probably the monday after thanksgiving. that's when we'll find out if they're going to take those cases. the other question is whether they will hear the challenge to california's proposition 8. that is also before the supreme court. not clear whether they would hear that. they may take the cases and decide to punt on prop 8. >> if they do that, ag
